Careers
One of the main reasons your child may decide to go to college is to obtain the job he/she wants. Your child may or may not know what he/she wants to do at this point. However, there’s no rush to figure that out while in high school. Continue to discuss different career opportunities related to your child’s interests and skills.  Help your child develop his/her skills and encourage activities that utilize those talents.

Here are a few Web sites to get you and your child started in the process of exploration:

IllinoisMentor is powered by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC).  It serves as a virtual guide to academic and career planning, helping your child discover personal dreams while determining and achieving goals.  The Career Center is an interactive site that helps your child explore careers based on his or her personality and interests.
  • The Occupational Outlook Handbook describes what workers do on the job, working conditions, the training and education needed, earnings and expected job prospects in a wide range of occupations.

  • The Illinois Career Resource Network is powered by the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES). It offers a variety of career exploration products for elementary, middle and high school students and adults - for anyone making career decisions!
