Rural Communities Seek to Prevent 'Brain Drain' with High School Graduates
11/3/2009

An October 30, 2009 Newsweek article discusses ways in which rural areas can change their way of thinking, in order to prevent 'brain drain' from taking away their high school graduates. For example, rather than focusing solely on academically successful high school students who are likely to attend college, communities should make sure all students are well-trained in areas that will benefit them in the global economy - such as computer technology, health care, sustainable agriculture and green energy. The article includes excerpts from a recent interview with Patrick J. Carr and Maria J. Kefalas, authors of a new book entitled "Hollowing Out the Middle."

The article is available at the Newsweek Web site.
